PLEASE NOTE The Tuesday morning Bible study this week (26 Sept) will be held on Thursday (28 Sept) because of the funeral Mass scheduled for Tuesday. This raises the question: Is it even possible to have a Tuesday morning Bible Study on a Thursday morning? If it is held on Thursday morning, is it still the Tuesday morning Bible Study? This is a profound question and demands some profound thinking. |

THE PROFIT FROM LAST SUNDAY'S
SPAGHETTI SUPPER came to $735.26. Thank you! One must keep in mind that this is a very good profit for the first spaghetti supper of the season. This is due to the fact that the expenditures for the first supper of the season are usually greater than for the remaining suppers. |
| NEXT SPAGHETTI SUPPER is Sunday, 1 October! Notify your taste buds! Notify your friends and neighbors! Notify all the ships at sea! |

PLEASE PRAY FOR
a woman who died on 16 September. Josephine Piccioni Motto, age
93, is the sister of St. Joseph parishioner Frank Piccioni. Eternal rest grant unto Josephine, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Please note: The first name, the married name and the age of the deceased are very similar to the first name, the married name and the age of a member of St. Joseph Parish. These are two separate and distinct persons. The latter is alive and well and, we hope, will remain so for a good many more years! |
| THERE WILL BE A MASS (last Monday of the month) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 25 September, at the Simon Kramer Institute in New Philadelphia. After the Mass, there will be the opportunity to venerate the first-class relic of St. Pauline Visintainer. If you wish to attend this Mass, but need a ride, call St. Joseph Rectory. |
|
JESSE JOSEPH KRIZNO, The following is an interesting (I think!)
little anecdote connected with Jesse's death: Eternal rest grant unto Jesse, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. |

JA PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE
PASTOR: Every once in
a while, someone will ask me, "When will those TV programs
you told us you recorded be shown on EWTN?" They are referring
to a series of fourteen half-hour programs that I co-hosted.
When asked, I have simply replied, "I don't know. I guess
the folks at EWTN will let me know if and when they decide to
run them." A few days ago, I was told that the programs
have been approved. (All programs submitted have to go through
a process of scrutinizing - which, of course, makes sense! They
have to be checked out for orthodoxy and appropriateness.) So,
it is my understanding that the programs will run on EWTN (one
program per week, I suppose) starting in March of 2007. son of Francis P. Mohan, MD and Stella Modrijan Mohan and SILVIA CRISTINA LIMA ROCHA LOHMANN, daughter of Fernando Armbrust Lohmann and Eliana Lima Rocha Lohmann The priests who concelebrated the Mass and solemnized the union were Fathers Pedro dos Santos and Edward B. Connolly. The Mass and the marriage ceremony were celebrated in a mixture of Portuguese and English. We gratefully acknowledge that the union of Patrick and Silvia now participates in and has been subsumed into "the Great Mystery" which is the nuptial union of Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church. I, Silvia, take you, Patrick, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Mohan! |

| The following is the text of a letter received from George V. Lynett, Publisher of The (Scranton) Times Tribune. Mr. Lynett and other members of the Lynett family are the owners of a group of newspapers, one of which is our own local newspaper, The Pottsville Republican & Herald. The letter is dated 8 September 2006, but was not seen by me until 19 September. |
Reverend Edward B. Connolly
Saint Joseph Parish
321 Howard Avenue
Pottsville PA 17901
Dear Father Connolly:
I am in receipt of your letter of September 4, 2006, including
the prior responses of Mike Joyce, Pete Banko and our Publisher,
Henry Nyce.
I believe you can understand and appreciate the policy implications
of running the Ken's Tire Ad from this previous correspondence.
It is our long-standing philosophy to allow and encourage our
publishers and their management teams to manage their newspaper
independently, as if it were their own publication.
Personally, I do not feel the ad was "soft porn". The
tastefulness of the content certainly could be debated. Reasonable
people could arrive at different conclusions as to whether it
should have been published or not.
My siblings and I firmly endorse and believe in the ability of
Henry Nyce and his team to exercise good judgment.
Thank you for reading The Republican & Herald. I am sorry
that we offended you and your parishioners.
Sincerely,
(signed)
George V. Lynett
Publisher

My comment: This letter is pathetic, unworthy both of the writer
and of the recipient. I am disappointed. I had thought the matter
would be resolved via gentlemanly discourse, resulting in a meeting
of minds. This has not happened. Consequently, we will expand
our efforts to persuade the publisher, Mr. Nyce, and his management
team to keep pornography out of our local newspaper, to observe
fundamental moral standards, to protect the dignity of women.
Our struggle is not against mere flesh and blood.
