BIRTHDAY NOTES Drew R. Weidner had a BD on 26 April and - Lord have mercy on us! - we didn't include it in last weekend's bulletin. To make matters worse, it was a milestone BD (ends in zero)! We regret the omission and wish him a Happy Belated BD. |
| JUST SO YOU KNOW you're not the only one who thinks so: Please know that yours truly also thinks that the April picture on the StJosPar / StFdSPar 2007 calendar is very strange and somewhat creepy. I don't like the May picture either, but for different reasons. This is my last time buying this line of calendars. What can I say? |

VERONICA JANET KEVY, a member of St. Joseph Parish, died on Friday, 27 April. Born on 23 January 1946, she was 61 years old. Roni is the youngest of the four children of the late Nathan and Lillian (Cappetta) Kevy. Her brother, Robert Kevy, died on 31 October 1991. Her mother, Lillian, died on 18 April 1997. Her father, Nathan, died on 20 August 1999. Roni's sisters, Myrna Kevy Eberly and Phyllis C. Kevy, survive her. When Roni was 20 years old, she sought and received Baptism into the Catholic Church. Fr. Ricapito baptized her in St. Barbara Church, Minersville, on 19 November 1966. Roni lived a life of mitzvot, done for God with joy in Christ Jesus. When she was diagnosed with cancer some years ago, she dealt with it appropriately, not dramatically, as an annoyance - at most, an inconvenience - but not a tragedy. Cancer did not define her. Roni was boldly pro-life. Undoubtedly, there are persons walking on the planet today who would have been aborted had Roni not spoken the truth, both when convenient and when inconvenient. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church on Wednesday, 2 May, at 10:00 a.m. From 8:30 a.m. until shortly before the Mass, there will be a viewing in the church. There will not be a viewing on Tuesday evening. The interment will take place in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. In the Preface (#1) of the Mass of Christian Burial we proclaim this piercing truth: "For those who are faithful (to God), life is changed, not ended." We hope that everyone who hears those words takes them to heart. The truth is that on 27 April 07, Roni Kevy's life was changed. It was not ended. She will rise from the dead. Eternal rest grant unto Roni, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. |

Could this letter be a sign that
the End of the World approacheth? Who knoweth? What letter am I talking about? Let me tell you: The IRS just sent (24 April 07) a "Dear Taxpayer" letter to St. Joseph Parish in which they admit that they made a mistake in seizing (yes, I do mean "seizing") $1,635.36 out of our parish checking account for what they called our failure to make SS payments. We told them and we told them and we told them over and over again that they were wrong and we were right and now they admit it. So, are they going to give us the money back? No! They are going to give us credits towards future payments. We'll settle for that. Gitcher shootin' arn, Pappy! It's them revenooers agin! |

PORNOGRAPHY AND CHO SEUNG-HUI by Peter J. Smith

Giovanni called Cho "evil" and said
the poems he wrote for her class revealed someone engaged in
''a personal violation
objectifying his subjects,'' doing
things ''to your body parts." MY COMMENT |

IF ANYONE KNOWS WHO OWNS THE
PICK-UP TRUCK - A BLACK CHEVY SILVERADO
which I sometimes see parked on Main Street in Mount Carbon,
would you please tell him to remove from his rear window the
offensive words, spelled out in large red letters, that are on
display there? If these words are not removed and if the truck continues to park on Main Street in Mount Carbon, I shall take appropriate action. The appropriate action may not be to the owner's liking. These words are an insult to women - as well as to men (like me] who have some relatives who are women. If there are any real, honest-to-goodness masculine men living in Mount Carbon - and I am fairly certain that there are - please inform the owner of the truck that he has been warned and that you won't tolerate him putting disrespectful words about women's breasts into the heads of the children of Mount Carbon as they play on the sidewalks and that you don't particularly admire men who equate women with objects. By next weekend, I want to see those words removed from the window or else the truck parked outside of my parish territory - preferably the former. |

MAXIMS FOR AVIATORS The probability of survival is equal to the angle of arrival. There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold, pilots! |

WELCOME, ERIC! We are happy to have you. Eric Strobel is a seminarian for the Diocese of Allentown. He is a student at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. He is in the class known as "Pre-Theology". [Despite recent rumors to the contrary, Limbo does exist. It has been re-named "Pre-Theology". Seminarians in "Pre-Theology" have completed college and have their Bachelor's degree, but have not yet started Theology.] Theology is the four-year curriculum that leads (one devoutly hopes!) to ordination to priesthood. Eric is an overnight guest at St. Joseph Parish. He will speak at all the Masses this weekend about the Bishop's Annual Appeal. We ask everyone to pay him heed. And - need we say it? - we ask everyone to be ENORMOUSLY and MAGNANIMOUSLY GENEROUS to the BISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL! |

THE BANNS OF MARRIAGE are proclaimed for the first time between Philip Noel Collier and Katherine
Eileen Whitney. Philip is a member of
St. Edmund of Abingdon Parish, Abingdon, Oxfordshire (England).
Katherine (more often called "Kate") is a member of
St. Joseph Parish. If anyone is aware of any impediment to the sacramental union of these two persons, he or she should promptly present such information to the pastor. |

WHAT HAPPENS TO CHILDREN WHO
DIE WITHOUT HAVING BEEN BAPTIZED? As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus' tenderness toward children which caused him to say: "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them, allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church's call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism. [Catechism of Catholic Church #1261] |

RIDE THE BUTERABUS Q. - What is a "Buterabus"? A. - A Buterabus is a bus that takes people from Pottsville to St. Catharine of Siena Cathedral in Allentown (and back) in order to attend the ordination - God willing! - of Christopher S. Butera to the priesthood. Now that you know that, please know this: St. Joseph Parish is sponsoring a Buterabus. It will leave Pottsville on Saturday, 2 June, at a time yet to be determined, in order to arrive in plenty of time at the Cathedral for the 10:30 a.m. ordination Mass. It will leave Allentown to return to Pottsville shortly after the ordination. How much will it cost you? Not sure right now. Not a whole lot. We will charge you whatever is appropriate. Depends on what it costs us. St. Joseph Parish is the parish in which Chris grew up. We would like to have a good showing of St. Joseph parishioners at the ordination Mass. If there are any teenagers who would like to attend, we might be able to give you a special price. If you would like to reserve your seat on the bus, call the Rectory now. Don't put it off. We need to know how many will be going. If you put off calling, you might not get on the bus. If there is no room for you on the bus but you still want to go, let us know. For half price, we'll let you run behind the bus. |
