OF ALL THE THINGS I'VE EVER LOST,
I MISS MY MIND THE MOST. Recently, driving from Pottsville to the Reading Hospital, I stopped for gas at the convenience store / gas station near the Mount Carbon arch. The pumps there don't take debit cards (my preferred way to pay for gas). But I figured I had enough money with me to pay for a fill-up. So, I filled it up. Having done so, I noted the price, which was $31.79. At least I think I noted it. However, I still have that over-riding mindset that a twenty dollar bill more than covers a tank of gas. So, I walked into the store to pay the clerk. He was a polite young man who appeared to be from India or Pakistan. He smiled at me and said "That will be $31.79." I handed him the twenty-dollar bill and waited for change. Then he repeated, "That will be $31.79." I laughed a self-deprecating laugh and apologized for not being with the program. Then I reached into my wallet and fished out two one-dollar bills and handed then to him and waited for my change. At this point, his tranquil face tensed up just a bit. He said, "That will be $31.79." So, I did the math. Let me see now. Is $22.00 more or less than $31.79? Good grief! How could I be so stupid? Thank God, I still had a ten-dollar bill left in my wallet. I handed it to him and re-apologized. But you can apologize just once too often. His facial expression told me that I had exceeded my quota of apologies for one miserable transaction and that it was time for me to go. He handed me my twenty-one cents and I departed into the night. Unfortunately, I was wearing my clerical garb. So, the young man knew I was a priest. He was probably a Muslim or a Hindu. I don't think I advanced the cause of Christianity with him. He probably thought, "These Catholic priests what a bunch of dimwits!" This whole miserable interchange was probably recorded on videotape. If so, I hope it gets lost! |

CURRENT DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT: PRO-LIFE or PRO-ABORTION? Notes

MADALYN MARIA YACKENCHICK, eighth child (third daughter) of Albert J., Sr. and Annetta (Mercuri) Yackenchick, will be baptized today (Sunday, 6 May) during the 10:45 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph Church . This beautiful little girl has no idea how much she is loved. Not only does she have two tried-and-true parents plus seven siblings to love her, she also has four grandparents, plus a whole supporting cast of uncles, aunts and cousins to love her. But above and beyond all of these, and eclipsing all of these, she has the love that is beyond all loves, the love Who is Love. She has God to love her. God loves her not merely as the human creature who she is. Today God exalts her above the status of "mere human". He exalts her to the level of His Own divinity. By sacramental baptism, little Madalyn Maria will share in the dignity of being an adopted daughter of God Most High. The Holy Spirit of God will take up residence within her today. Even though it would seem to us who "stand outside" that, because she is an infant, she is unable to pray, nevertheless prayer will be going on within her, because the Spirit within her will be praying. We give praise and we give thanks to God for His marvelous goodness to Albert and Annetta and we extend to the two of them our deepest respect and gratitude. They and their children are signs of hope for the Church and for the whole human race. May they, together will all who will descend from them, be one day gathered together in the Kingdom of God's Love. |

Don't look this gift horse
in the mouth One needs only look at other
cultures to understand the insidious enemy with which we are
dealing. In this culture of death, in which the rest of the world
finds itself so deeply submerged, the most prudent thing any
country can do, especially a Catholic one, is to take pre-emptive
measures to thwart any infiltration of evil into its (relatively)
pristine culture. The rest of the world, through the Church,
has named the enemy - specific faces need not be identified.
As the appearance of the detractor is constantly changing it
seems more important to focus on the over-all agenda which remains
the only constant. |

THE REPUBLIC OF MALTA is a small independent island nation - seven islands
in all - located in the Mediterranean, south of Sicily. It is
one of the most Catholic countries in the world. With a population
of about 404,500, it is the smallest of the EU nations. Partly
because of pressures from the European Union, the citizens of
Malta are being asked to revise their Constitution in order to
legalize abortion. The letter that appears on page 11 of this bulletin was published in the 19 April edition of the Times of Malta. We recommend that you read it. You might want to note the name of the writer. She has a Catholic understanding of who is a human person and a catholic vision of who is her neighbor. |
