THE SANCTUARY LAMP at St. Joseph Church is offered, during
the week of 09 - 15 September, in loving memory of Elanore Tegano
Folino, at the request of her husband, Jack. A NIGHT OF HEALING AND FORGIVENESS will be held at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Minersville, on Thursday, 13 September. Father Larry J. Hess, pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel and of St. Vincent dePaul Parishes, Bangor (PA), will be the homilist. The evening starts with confessions at 6:30 p.m., followed by Mass at 7:00 p.m. (Confessions will also be heard after Mass.) After Mass, Fr. Hess will pray with people for healing. Although being involved in healing ministry for more than 20 years, some call him "the priest of the holy card" because of a prayer he wrote and had printed up and which he distributes to the sick. For directions to St. Stanislaus Church, call 544-2211. |

son of Jerome M. and Judith (D'Alessandro) Strokelitus, and STACEY MARIE McCABE, daughter of Gerald A. McCabe and Lenora (Whiteash) Fegley, married one another today - Saturday, 8 September, the feast of the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary - at a Nuptial Mass in St. Joseph Church. They have committed themselves
to a PERMANENT marriage. It cannot be dissolved by anything
other than death. We are delighted to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Strokelitus into the community of St. Joseph Parish. Chad has been a member for a good many years. Stacey hopes to become a member in due time. May God bless them and keep them in His love. May they help one another to grow into closer union with God. |

WHAT TIME IS CHURCH? I answered the telephone rather late last Saturday night (or Sunday morning). I said what I usually say: "Hello! St. Joseph and St. Francis!" The voice on the other end (a female voice, not one that I recognized) said: "What time is church?" This tickled my risibilities. I was tempted to say (but did not say): "Ah! A question about Time! And a question about the Church! And a question about how the two inter-relate. Well, goodness gracious, let me see! The Church in the sense of the Mystical Body of Christ came into existence from the wounded side of the crucified Lord in about the year A.D. 30 and was publicly manifested that same year in Jerusalem at the event we call 'Pentecost'. However, the remote origins of the Church (what we might call the Qahal Israel) go back to the time of Abraham, which was about two millennia B.C. We thoroughly anticipate that the Church as we know her will endure until the Second Coming of the Lord, but we don't have a date on that. However, we anticipate that, shortly after the Lord returns, the Church will be transferred out of Time and be swooped up into Eternity. More than that I can't really tell you right now. You could always call Father Bambrick at Mary Queen of Peace for additional details on what Time is in relation to Church. Let me give you his number. He would be happy to hear from you. He doesn't have much to do on Saturday nights." But, as I say, I did not say that. All of the above was "unspoken thoughts of the pastor". Here is what I actually said: "What time is church? The Masses tomorrow are 7:45 and 10:45 at St. Joseph's and 9:15 and 12:15 at St. Francis deSales." |

UPDATES ON SOME PEOPLE YOU MIGHT KNOW AILEEN SMITH CICERO, a member of St. Joseph Parish and,
until recently, a resident of Palo Alto, has moved to an assisted
living facility. Statesman Woods 2619 Trenton Road Levittown PA 19056 RAYMOND and UGENIA CARAVAN, members of St. Joseph Parish and,
until recently, residents of Pottsville, have sold their snow
shovels and moved to a non-snowy peninsula. Unit #107 525 Barcelona Avenue Venice Island FL 34285 MAE GERACE LONG, who took a backwards tumble on 4th Street, right outside the church, as she was leaving the 4:30 p.m. Mass last Saturday (1 Sept), thereby alarming her many friends and family members and putting a nasty gash on the back of her head, is doing just fine, we are happy to say. Mrs. Long is an amazing woman. She is the only 95-year- old woman I know who can take such a nasty fall and, while still bleeding, keep her composure and make a joke of it while waiting for the ambulance. ANGELA DiCELLO STELLA, age 99, the oldest member of St. Joseph Parish, had been living in Pittsburgh for a few months with her niece while preparing for and recuperating from hip-replacement surgery. We are happy to say that she has returned to Pottsville. Her house was happy to see her, and so are her friends and relatives and neighbors. We welcome her back and we also welcome her new hip. INTERESTING PIECE OF NEWS
YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED Joseph P. Kennedy II is the eldest son of Ethel Skakel Kennedy and the late Robert F. Kennedy. He served as a United States Congressman for a time and then left politics. Mr. Kennedy had been married to Sheila Rauch, an Episcopalian. They have two sons. Joseph divorced Sheila in 1991. In 1993, Joseph married (more correctly "attempted to marry") his former Congressional aide, Beth Kelly. At some point, Joseph petitioned a Church tribunal in Massachusetts for a declaration of nullity in regard to his marriage to Sheila, so that he could marry Beth in the Church (i.e. have his civil marriage to Beth convalidated). The declaration of nullity ("annulment") was granted. However, Sheila - obviously a woman to be reckoned with - filed a petition with Rome to have the decision of the Massachusetts tribunal reversed. It has just recently been made public that Rome (to be exact, "the Sacred Roman Rota", which is the highest court in the Catholic Church) reversed the ruling of the Massachusetts tribunal and ruled in favor of Sheila Rauch Kennedy. Hence, in the eyes of the Church, Joseph and Sheila are still husband and wife! Obviously, Joseph and Beth are not. Moral(s) of the story: #1 - It's not over until the fat lady sings. #2 - It's not over until it's over. #3 - It's definitely not over until Rome has spoken. #4 - It seems as though our Holy Father is serious about tightening up some screws that have gotten loose over the past forty years or so. I shall probably think of Sheila when I read the parable about the persistent widow and the corrupt judge! |
