This is a deficit!

ONE SUNDAY A FEW MONTHS AGO, a lady came out from Mass at St. Joseph Church, stepped off the pavement and fell backwards, hitting her head on the curb (ouch!). Her scalp was cut. Blood on her head and even on the curb! A crowd started to gather! I got upset! Her family got upset! Her friends got upset! Everybody coming out of church got upset! I saw a squirrel standing across the street in front of Yuengling's. He had dropped his acorn! He was upset! The whole neighborhood was upset! The lady herself was not upset! But she was 95 years old, for crying out loud! She should have been upset! No way is it a good idea to crack open your skull when you are 95! She should have been moaning and groaning. I thought about singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"! "This doesn't look good!" I thought! "Maybe I should send for the priest!" Then it dawned on me that I was the priest! I thought "Maybe I should run back into the church, get the holy oils and do last rites!" Someone called 911. The ambulance came. We waved bye-bye. "Farewell, dear friend!" I was thinking scary thoughts. Next Sunday, the lady was back in church as if nothing had happened. "This is one holy and hard-headed lady" I thought to myself. Well, please know that Mae Long will be 96 years old this Valentine's Day. MAY MAE LONG LONGER LIVE!

AND NOW A FEW UNSOLICITED WORDS ABOUT MINCEMEAT!
I first became aware of the existence of a substance known as "mincemeat" when I was a young child. I knew that "mincemeat pie" was something that people ate on festive occasions, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. I remember eating some mincemeat pie at an early age, probably at my grandmother's house. I remember thinking - at the time - that it was something I could live happily without.
Being a child, I presumed (quite naturally, I think) that "mincemeat" was a form of MEAT, i.e. the flesh of an animal. I remember thinking that it was peculiar that anyone would make pie out of meat!
I carried that thought in my head for a number of years, well into adult years. Then, somewhere along the line, I remember that "mincemeat" came into a conversation. I revealed that I thought it was strange that meat was an ingredient in a pie. I remember that someone snickered at me and told me that mincemeat does not contain meat (i.e. animal flesh), that the word "meat" in "mincemeat" is simply an old-fashioned meaning of that word, that it referred to "food in general". I felt slightly embarrassed that my ignorance was revealed! (One might say that I felt as though someone had made mincemeat of me!)
Now, we come full circle. Just this past week, I became aware that mincemeat DOES contain meat - yes, I mean "meat" in the sense of "animal flesh".
I did what I should have done in the first place. I looked it up in the dictionary! (Three cheers for dictionaries!) I have the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) on CD. It is a wonderful resource. I looked up "mincemeat". I won't include the complete entry, but here is the relevant part.

A mixture made of currants, raisins, sugar, suet, apples, almonds,candied peel, etc., and sometimes meat chopped small; used in mince-pies.

Note that MEAT (i.e. flesh) is an optional ingredient of "mincemeat" but that SUET is a standard ingredient. However, suet is a kind of meat! So "mincemeat" DOES include MEAT! In case you don't know what "suet" is, here is the OED definition:

The solid fat round the loins and kidneys of certain animals, esp. that of the ox and sheep, which, chopped up, is used in cooking, and, when rendered down, forms tallow.
