THE SANCTUARY LAMP is offered, during the week of 01
- 07 June, in loving memory of Domenica ["Mamie"] DeMatteo
LaSelva, at the request of John and Frances Weiss. THE LOURDES GROTTO CANDLE is offered, during the week of 01 - 07 June, in loving memory of Nat and Ida Piccioni, at the request of Bob, Sharon and Marina. INTERESTING MEETING I went to a meeting at St. Mary Parish, Kutztown, on Thursday, 29 May. Actually, I went to TWO meetings at St. Mary Parish, Kutztown, on Thursday, 29 May. Bishop Cullen was at both of them. He told me a few interesting things - three interesting things, to be exact. #1 - Saint Joseph Parish, Pottsville, will be closing up for good on 15 July 2008 at midnight. #2 - Saint Francis deSales Parish, Mount Carbon, will also be closing up for good on 15 July 2008 at midnight. #3 - Instead of sending me to man the take-out window at Dunkin' Donuts in order to serve coffee and hear confessions, he is sending me to be the pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Girardville, and St. Vincent DePaul Parish, Girardville, effective 15 July 2008 at midnight. I have only one question (actually two questions): Where is Girardville and how do I get there? |

A WOMAN I SAW I attended a large festive social gathering not too long ago. Just so you know: It was not held in Schuylkill County. None of the persons in attendance at the gathering were - as far as I know - residents of Schuylkill County. In fact, I would bet that few, if any, of the persons at the gathering would have even a vague idea of where Schuylkill County is located, let alone Pottsville, let alone Mount Carbon. All of the foregoing is my attempt at a giant disclaimer, so that no one suspects that I am referring to anyone who is locally known. I assure you, I am not! Anyway, here is my point: I saw a woman at the gathering. She was not unattractive. In fact, at first glance, she was not the least bit unattractive. She was thirty-something. I did not know who she is. I do not know who she is. I don't know anything about her other than what I am about to tell you. Because it was a festive gathering, this woman was dressed in a festive garment, such as women are wont to wear when people gather for happy times. As I saw this woman go out onto the dance floor by herself in order to do what people do on dance floors - dance! - I saw to my distress that she had rather large tattoos on both of her arms, plus another tattoo somewhat south by southeast of her left clavicle. Immediately, I experienced a spontaneous feeling of revulsion, such as one might experience when confronted with extreme ugliness. I felt an acute pain in my aesthetic sense. Pardon me if that sounds uncharitable, but I insist that it is really not uncharitable. Why not? Well, because it did not proceed from my will. I take responsibility for all of the acts of my will. However, spontaneous feelings are something else altogether. I take no moral responsibility for them, although I do, as must we all, take moral responsibility for the decisions that are suggested by such feelings. I am referring to hateful words or deeds. |
|
Back to the spontaneous feeling of revulsion:
I think to myself: This woman certainly has a mother and a
father. Who they are or where they are, I have no idea, but
I wonder how they feel about having a tattooed daughter. Probably
they don't say anything - either because they are dead or else
they are weary and worn out or else because they, like their
daughter, have surrendered to the World. She probably has a sibling or two or three or four or more. I wonder how they feel about having a tattooed sister. Of course, it is possible that one or more of them marches to the same drumbeat as their sister. I have no idea. I doubt that the woman has a husband or a boyfriend. If so, she would probably not have gone out onto the dance floor unaccompanied. Why am I including this in the bulletin? It is, I think, highly unlikely that any female member of StJosPar or StFdSPar or any other woman who reads this bulletin is thinking of getting a tattoo. However, having said that, I just want to say something about women and tattoos. If what I say makes anyone angry, all I can say is that it's not the first time someone got angry at me and it won't be the last. Here is what I want to say: Women are beautiful and noble. A woman's body is a magnificent work of art. [Three cheers for God the Creator!] I am absolutely certain that it saddens and disappoints God the Father to see the body of one of His daughters defiled with tattoos! When I see a woman who has a tattoo, a warning light goes on in my brain. Personality disorder? Inner turmoil? Deep hurt? Spirit of unchastity? Emotional deprivation? As surely as God made little green apples, something went haywire somewhere! The appropriate response to such women is prayer on their behalf. |
